Most travelers have heard of Global Entry and TSAPrecheck, but have you heard about Mobile Passport Control (MPC)? Let us tell you, it's a game-changer! We recently returned from our trip to Mexico and took advantage of this free service, and boy, were we impressed. We bypassed a line of over 100 people and walked right up to the front of a non-existent line for MPC users. We guarantee we were in our car before some of the people in that original line had finished going through. Now, let's dive into what MPC is and how it works!
What is Mobile Passport Control? Mobile Passport Control is a free app that allows eligible travelers to submit their passport and customs declaration information electronically, minimizing wait times upon arrival. It's like having your own express lane through customs! Currently available at 33 U.S. airports, 11 Pre-clearance locations, and 4 seaports, MPC is a game changer for frequent and occasional international travelers alike.
How does it work? Using MPC is as easy as 1-2-3! Here's a step-by-step guide:
- Download the Free App: Head to your app store and download the Mobile Passport Control app. Remember, the official app is free, so be wary of any site or app asking for a fee.
- Set Up Your Travelers: Once installed, set up your travelers within the app. You can add up to 12 family members per account, making it convenient for group travel. Scan or manually enter their passport information, take a photo, and set everything up in advance. Rest assured, the app is secure, and profiles can be deleted after travel if you prefer.
- Arrival Made Easy: When you arrive at a preclearance location or land in the U.S., open the app and select the appropriate option. Follow the simple steps to submit your information. Once submitted, you'll receive a receipt with a QR code directly in the app. Now, keep an eye out for the MPC signs and bypass those lengthy regular customs lines. Show your QR code to the customs officer, who will scan it, verify your passports, and, if necessary, double-check any additional information. From there, you're free to go! It's that easy!
Important Notes:
- The Mobile Passport Control app does not replace your physical passport. Remember to bring it with you.
- Only eligible travelers can use this service. Currently, eligible travelers include U.S. citizens, U.S. lawful permanent residents, and Canadian B1/B2 visa holders.
- MPC lines may not be available at every airport and seaport, so be sure to check the app for participating locations.
- MPC does not replace Global Entry or TSAPrecheck. It's an additional service to expedite your customs process.
- Always remember, the official MPC app is free to use. Any site or app asking for a fee is a scam.
Say goodbye to long, tedious lines and hello to a stress-free customs experience with Mobile Passport Control! Give it a try on your next international trip, and you'll wonder how you ever traveled without it. Safe travels, adventurers!
